Freegan Living

“See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time.”

--Robin Williams

Apparently there exists an entire group of people who survive comfortably on the by-products of other individuals. Usually wealthier individuals. I suppose the purpose is supposed to make some sort of statement, but, to tell the truth, it seems just weird.

I think I am just tired of people "making statements." And I guess there have always been these things, this tug-of war, for as long as we have had the ability to communicate.

Do people take up a cause for the right reasons?

Anyway, here is something new to me.

Ya know what? I LIKE stores with food. I decide what I want to eat, find a decent sounding recipe, head to the store and buy what I need. More often than not, the lovely Safeway in Kenmore does not have what I am looking for: green chiles fresh in the produce section, garbanzo bean flour, various spices.

I agree that consumerism sucks and it makes me nauseated when I think of all that we waste. But I don't think that reducing myself to rummaging through garbage dumpsters is the way I'm going to change the world. Maybe my $200/mo grocery bill would be better going into our boat fund, but I think it's worth $200 to me to be able to buy what I want, when I want it, and without having to stick my head, arms and whatever else in a rank dumpster.

But maybe that's just me.

Oh yeah, I published too quickly.

So if the STORES don't have what I'm looking for, I think it's a right logical conclusion that their garbage bins won't have it either. So, I like to eat. I like to eat what I choose, and I am reasonably sure I like it better without having to acquire it while smelling other rotten garbage.

So, off to the store I go.
